Happy New Year! It is already January 13th. But this is the first edition of The Insider this year. We want to say a new year's greeting to you. Did you have a good holiday season? In Japan, we have a long New Year's holiday and usually take a vacation from December 29th to January 3rd. We go back to our hometown and gather for the celebration for the New Year with our family. We eat "Toshikoshi soba" (Japanese soba) on New Year eve, and "Osechi" on New Year's Day.
Ordinary Osechi has Japanese sake, sticky rice, cooked food, pickled vegetables and grilled fish. There are different types of Osechi on each country. We prepare Osechi till New Year. Each Osechi dish lasts for a long time. Because we don't use fire during New Year's Day, in order not to make fire of God angry. On the other hand, we don't cook on New Year's Day in order to let women take a leave.
We'll introduce a Japanese meat loaf today. You can put it in the Osechi dish. So, make some Osechi and get some rest!
