London Olympic 2012/ Once in a Lifetime Event!
By Keiko H. Johnson
Despite the typical wet weather in the UK, the 70 day long torch relay that covers an 8,000-mile journey around the UK before it arrives at the Olympic Stadium on July 27th began at Land's End in Cornwell, UK on the 19th of May. This iconic event of the Olympic Games, the torch relay, will come to the town where I live. It is such an honor to inform that I am here in England was able to watched this memorable event in person.
As the news had already reported, the Olympic Flame was brought to the UK from Greece in May by David Beckham who was part of the successful London 2012 bid team in 2005 and who is also a famous soccer player from the UK. Once the Olympic fire was submitted to the Royals, three-time Olympic gold medalist Ben Ainslie took the first grip of the torch for the Olympic Torch Relay.
Over 60,000 nominees were in the running to carry the Olympic Flame, but only 7,300 were selected as torchbearers through the London 2012 “Moment to Shine” nomination campaign. The campaign run by The London 2012 Organizing Committee (LOCOG), in addition to the three sponsors of the Olympic Torch Relay: Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung, focused on a story of personal achievement which was as a contribution to their local community in order to select the torchbearers.
For those given the honor of carrying the Olympic torch prior to the upcoming London Olympics, there are two important tasks they must achieve. They must transfer the torch to the next person in the relay, and keep the flame lit. The runners will paint the entire island of the UK and bring the Olympic fever to many small towns.
We are now counting down the days to the Olympics. The successful delivery of the torch to the Olympic Stadium in London on July 27th and then the biggest event in England will begin.
